The Villages Executive Golf: Southern Star Course (The Villages, FL on 12/02/17)

My last round in Florida was right around the corner from where my parents live. Dad and I teed it up one last time, before I had to give up my retired lifestyle! Last year, we played the Yankee Clipper course which is housed out of the same proshop as Southern Star. In fact, if you look at my first picture of Southern Star then you can see the Yankee Clipper course off to the right!

I’m not sure that I have a whole bunch to say about Southern Star, that I haven’t said about the other executive courses that I’ve played at The Villages! There isn’t anything overly unique about the layout besides the tough opening holes. The 1st and the 3rd pack a decent punch as water lurks short and right on both of those holes. They sure look a bit intimidating as you try to loosen up! The 3rd tops out at 200 yards if you play the back tees, but you’ll still get to hit some short and mid irons on the other holes if you play from back there.

I played one set of tees up and they played 1,316 yards, spread over eight par 3’s and one par 4. The highlight will probably be swinging away with your driver on the 4th hole and seeing how far you can hit it! The yardages are well mixed and I hit a four iron, pitching wedge, and other irons in-between. You’ll get a few crazy breaking putts on the 6th and 7th and my birdie efforts were stymied there after knocking it close both times!

It was another textbook one and a half hour round (walking) and an enjoyable way to end my Florida trip, on the course with dad!
