Pecan Hollow Golf Course (Plano, TX on 09/13/19)

The final round of our golf trip was a local pick, as I live about 10 minutes from Pecan Hollow Golf Course. Pecan Hollow was on our radar because my friend and I had read nothing but great things about the course! You have to search a bit online, but Pecan Hollow is generally regarded as a sneaky good course in the North Dallas area.

I actually played here again in October and while my pictures are from September, my review reflects two rounds at Pecan Hollow. Something unusual for me, I know!

Pecan Hollow is a municipal course that was originally designed by Don January and it opened in the 1970’s. The course was renovated by D. A. Weibring in 2011 so you end up with a nice mix of charm and modern design elements.

Like many courses in the Metroplex, Pecan Hollow is located in an urban area on some land that isn’t easily developed. The course plays around a couple creeks (Rowlett Creek and Cottonwood Creek), which flow through the property. Thankfully, homes don’t line the course.

The par-5 3rd, with a tree that influences shot selection.

I would classify Pecan Hollow a parkland style course and there is a mix of challenges. Many holes run parallel to another hole and are separated by mature trees.

These trees require some strategy and accuracy, making them the course’s most interesting feature! While I could support a tree removal project, I think there is enough room to play your game. The few tight driving holes (2, 9, & 18) are offset by large driving areas on the other holes.

For both of my rounds I’ve played the tournament tees which are 71.2/127/6567. As those numbers show the course isn’t absurdly difficult and there are a few different ways to play it (long game, short game, etc). Pecan Hollow plays as a par-71 with three par-5’s so consider that when picking the tees to play.

The 10th hole – one of my favorites!

Besides some position holes, I think the other tough part about Pecan Hollow will be three long par-4’s! The 6th plays 471 yards while the 16th is 445 yards and the 18th is 435 yards. If you can manage a par on two of those holes I’d say you’ve done well.

The 10th, at 341 yards, is one of the shorter par-4’s and probably the course’s signature hole. It plays through a chute of trees and over Rowlett Creek. It presents very well, especially when the sun is setting behind you!

The conditions both times I’ve played have been phenomenal, making Pecan Hollow an awesome value! I paid $40 one time and $28 (riding) the other. Everything has been cut tight and full. The greens are slick and pure, allowing you to make lots of putts.

While there are a few things I don’t love about Pecan Hollow (for example, the course could be more open in spots and the 6th would be better as a feel-good par-5), I think it is a super solid course and one you should be looking at if you find yourself in the North Dallas area. The course also has a short course that I haven’t played yet, but stay tuned for that review in the future!
