After our round at Four Mile Ranch we had some lunch and then went for a bonus round. We looked at Walking Stick, but they didn’t have any last minute tee times available. So, we did a drive by at Elmwood Golf Course and the proshop said while they were closing early for the holiday, we could walk eighteen holes if we wanted.
For the $27 green fee, I have zero complaints about my time here. I didn’t expect much based on the appearance of the course from the parking lot, but Elmwood turned out to be a solid place. The layout provides some interest and everything was in good shape.

Elmwood is a municipal course and as you’ll see in the pictures, the conditions were excellent. All the turf was lush with good coverage. The greens were smooth and had some fire to them. It was tough to keep chips close to the hole and putts just kept trickling.
The course is a parkland style layout that has quite a bit of charm to it. The course was designed by the Army Corp of Engineers in the 1930’s and gets its name from all the trees along the fairways. I’m not sure if Elmwood was originally eighteen holes or just nine. But, currently there are two courses here – the eighteen-hole course we played and then a nine-hole short course.
Elmwood is a par-70 and from the blue tees it plays 6,669 yards. The rating is 69.5 and the slope is 117. Honestly, I’m a bit surprised that the rating and slope aren’t higher. If someone doesn’t find the narrow fairways then they will be struggling to get approach shots near the greens. The tight driving corridors make Elmwood challenging. The greens have some false edges to be mindful of as well.

Even at elevation, there are a number of lengthy holes. For example, there are five par-4’s that are more than 420 yards. Then the 15th is a 582 yard par-5 that seemed to go on forever. However, the other two par-5’s are shorter and reachable with a good tee shot.
There isn’t much in the way of signature holes or unique features at Elmwood. But, at the same time there aren’t any terrible holes. It turned out to be a nice course for an afternoon walk and a way to unwind. I’d certainly recommend Elmwood as an affordable choice if you find yourself in Pueblo.
