Trails of Frisco Golf Club (Frisco, TX on 09/21/13)

We found a 10am time at Trails of Frisco through Golfnow for $60, which was the same price as going through course’s website. The strange thing was that there weren’t any tee times available directly from the course. Not sure what causes something like that but things worked out just fine.

It had rained the last couple days so it was cart path only for the first seven holes. Plus, there were foursomes stacked on the 1st tee waiting to play. This led to some slow play to begin the round before the pace improved. A marshal was out apologizing for the slow play and ultimately we were allowed to drive on the fairways! All in all it ended up taking about 4.5 hours to play, which wasn’t terrible all things considered.

While looking at the course’s website for tee times I got the impression that Trails of Frisco would be in an undeveloped part of town. I was surprised to find that the course is in the middle of an urban area! The holes are not routed through the homes, but the homes line the perimeter of the property. For the most part the course has a natural vibe and reminded me of some of the courses in the Orlando area.

I think the par-3 11th is one of the course’s best holes.

Because of the soft conditions we ended up playing the blue tees at 70.7/124/6317. The course plays as a par-71 (with the usual four par-5’s), so the black tees at 74.0/138/6959 would have been way too much for my game these days! And, what you’ll find at Trails of Frisco is a course with a bit of a wetlands feel to it. You’ll want to keep shots straighter if possible as there are plenty of hazards that pinch landing areas. The toughest thing about the course might be trying to figure out where the turf ends and where the hazards begin.

On the front nine there is a mix of different holes, including the difficult par-4 5th, which was 426 yards into the wind! In contrast, the 7th is a short par-5 with a split fairway and the 8th is a short par-4, both of which offered a chance for a birdie.

On the back nine the 11th was one of my favorites. It is a short par-3 over water and allows another birdie chance before the course starts to get more difficult. For example, take the par-3 14th (204 yards) which I thought was one of the toughest holes on the course. It also plays over a hazard and the view of the green was partially obstructed by high vegetation.

Conditions at Trails of Frisco were good, with the fairways providing nice lies. The tees were cut tight and the greens rolled pure, albeit slower than they looked.

Overall, I enjoyed the round here and thought that the course was challenging without being overly difficult. I’ll say it isn’t the strongest course off the tee and there is some guesswork involved for the best lines. However, the value is solid and I’d recommend a round at Trails of Frisco. Finally, for whatever reason my pictures turned out blurry – so sorry about that!
