After my round at Woodbrier I had one more course that I wanted to check out! I swung by Appleland Sports Center, just off I-81, to check out their 12-hole executive course.
As I’ve mentioned before I’ve started to enjoy playing some short courses. Plus, after playing a 6-hole course and a lighted par-3 course recently I thought a 12-hole course would help complete a crazy month of golf!
Appleland is one of those family-oriented sports complexes with plenty of different activities. There are batting cages, a large driving range, go karts and some other activities. I was there to check out the golf course, which I never knew existed. In fact, I found out about the course through an Instagram post that I saw.
I didn’t expect much from Appleland, but I walked away pretty impressed! The setting is above average and you get a nice mix of par-3’s and par-4’s. Plus, there is plenty of mounding that adds to the course’s look. Unfortunately, my pictures don’t look great because of the gray sky so you’ll have to use your imagination!
Most of the course is tucked away behind the driving range. The driving range plays into a hillside and the course has a few holes across the top of that ridge, with other holes at the bottom of the small hill. Down at the bottom you’ll find some nice mountain and farmland views. Considering the course’s proximity to I-81 Appleland had a secluded feel to it.
The course plays as a par-39 and tops out at 2,017 yards, so it isn’t long at all! In fact, all the par-3’s (9 of them) play between 83 and 140 yards so you’ll likely have plenty of short irons.
What I liked the most about Appleland is that you can still hit your driver on the par-4’s! There are three short par-4’s (all around 320 yards) that allow you to hit whatever club you want off the tee.
Appleland was well maintained and for $12 it was a great walk! If you saw my last post you’ll know we’ve received a bunch of rain recently so the course was wet, but very playable. The greens were in their final stages of aeration and a bit slow, but a good speed for beginners.
My only complaint is that most of the par-3’s had mats for tees, and the damp mats made it tough to clip the ball. Still, I understand the necessity for the mats given the bargain green fees.
If you get a chance to check out Appleland’s executive course I say do it! I enjoyed my time here and it should sharpen your short game.
