Beckett Ridge Golf Club (West Chester, OH on 09/09/12)

This was my final stop on my cross county trip, course #13 and I played an afternoon round here on 09/09/12. I played the blue tees at 6471/71.9/132 and in short I found the course to be very challenging. The toughness came through a very hilly and tight layout that required a lot of precision to score well. The hilly layout created some blind shots and right away this was evidenced on hole #2 and #3. Both of these tee shots played up a hill without the green in sight. This feel continued throughout and hole #7, a 402 yard par 4, played straight up another hill and was one of the tougher tee shots that I have ever had to hit as there was just no room to hit one off line. The course was routed through a housing community and many of the holes had out of bounds on both sides of the holes adding an element of fear for the stroke and distance penalty. There were some solid holes including #12 a downhill par 5 with a blind tee shot and #13 which was a downhill par 3. There was at least a club elevation change on 11 or 12 holes so that kept me on my toes to pick the right club and hit it solid. I thought the course was very tricky to play for the first time. Hole #3 turned straight left after the tee shot, hole #8 required a tee shot to the right side of the fairway for the best angle to the green, and hole #14 was one of the more goofy par 5’s that I have played as it required a lay up to 160 yards (or more) or required going for the green in two shots. Finally I could not tell which way holes #17 and #18 went while standing on the tee. The course had five par 5s which is something that I always like because I think that it gives someone the best chance to put up a good score. As far as conditioning, all parts of the course were in good shape and it was very green. I put together a good round here, but this could be a place where I could shoot millions if I played here regularly. I would not call it a destination course, but overall it was a good play because it was a good value for the conditions (~$30 to ride on a weekend afternoon).
