After playing at TPC Twin Cities we went for a bonus round. It was another exhausting trip but we couldn’t pass up the chance to play another new course.
We called a couple places close to TPC but most of them had leagues during the week. Chomonix Golf Course was close and they had open tee times. So that is how we ended up here on a golf trip, in case any locals stumble on this post. Ha!
Chomonix is tucked back in a natural area near multiple lakes and a creek. There looked to be some nice trails not far from the course. We didn’t spend much time in any one area on this trip, but I liked the outdoors aspect of Minneapolis-Staint Paul, at least from what I saw.

Anyway, the theme to Chomonix is its quirky layout and many target-style golf holes. Like the nearby trails, the course is surrounded by thick woods which leads to a very difficult test for those golfers who don’t hit it straight (me). From the blue tees the course is only 6,550 yards but the rating is 71.9 and the slope is 134.
The front nine is narrow in spots but isn’t too wacky, except for the 5th hole. The 5th is a short par-5 (493 yards) that is a double dogleg. The tee shot goes to the left before the hole moves back right near the green. That essentially hides the green complex from view if trying to get there in two shots, requiring two blind shots over a bunch of trees. More risk than reward if you ask me.

The back nine is where Chomonix has most of its funk. If I’m honest, there are a couple really weird holes due to the land that surrounds them. The two par-5’s on the back nine (the 10th and the 13th) are reachable and a good birdie chance with a straight drive. But the 12th, 17th and 18th are all strange par-4’s. These holes are super narrow and the 17th and 18th are doglegs with awkward angles. While standing on the 18th tee it doesn’t look like there is a fairway at all!
The course is run by the county and was in decent shape. The turf was full and the rough was thick. My only complaint were the slow greens. It was tough to make anything when having to hit the ball so firmly.
I knew Chomonix wasn’t going to be a destination course and for the $50 weekday afternoon price, it wasn’t exactly a bargain either. Though, for our purposes it was fine. However, all things considered, I probably wouldn’t golf here regularly if I lived in the area.
