Escena Golf Club (Palm Springs, CA on 05/26/12)

I played here on 05/26/12 from the Championship tees (71.1/124/6615). This is a Jack Nicklaus design that opened within the last 10 years (2005 I believe). I have not played many Nicklaus designs, but from what I read he likes to build huge slopes and many levels into the greens. For the most part the putts here were very straight and only a couple holes had large slopes from one level to the other. The course is right by the airport and like most courses near airports, it can be windy (which was the case when I played). Thankfully the course is open and allows someone to hit it a little wild so it isn’t a classic desert layout. The opening holes allow someone to get off to a good start (#1 thru #8) but then it gets tougher. Hole #9 is a par 4 with water all down the left, #12 is a long par 3 with a crazy green, and #14 and #15 have water in play on every shot. Hole #16 is heavily bunkered and #17 is another long par 3. The layout is good with five par 5’s and five par 3’s which is a design feature that I really like as it allows a chance to score. Bunkers, water, and long par 3’s dominate the course but there are not any tricks. The course condition was good for this time of year and the rough was down. The bunkers were not in the best shape and had quite a few rocks. The course has good views and only a couple holes have visible homes. It was a good deal on a weekend morning at ~$50 and for those that like to walk it could be an easy walk the right time of year. I would call it a good course to start at on a golf trip (besides no range).
