Hunter’s Creek Golf Club (Orlando, FL on 11/23/12)

I played here on 11/23/12 from the green tees (72.7/127/6521) late in the morning. Like yesterday’s pick, today’s pick was about keeping the price reasonable. Basically I was just looking for a place to play knowing that I would not be playing a top notch course. The course is located off of 417 which runs to the airport and on the way I passed by Celebration Golf Club and Falcon’s Fire Golf Club, both of which would be better choices for someone not as price conscious as me this trip. Right away I noticed that the back tees play 7400+ yards and that there are 5 sets of tee boxes, so this place can play as tough as someone would like. While the course is routed through a community, I did not think that the homes were as much a bother here as some of the other community courses that I have played. I think this was the case because there were many pine trees separating the rough line from the homes. Some of the interior holes on the course did not have any homes in play so those holes had an open feel to them. The pine trees created a natural feel to many holes and in some cases prevented a wayward shot from ending up in a hazard or out of bounds. Many times I could find a poor shot so I did not lose too many golf balls especially considering that the fairways normally were pretty wide. The course had many interesting design elements including: an island like green surrounded by bunkers on #3, a couple tight driving holes such as #4 and #9, a long and narrow green on #6, some dog legs, and a long closing hole. The course required good ball striking because it had small greens, some with large elevation changes between the front and back tiers. The fairways were in good shape, but the overall condition of the course was average with some tees being sanded and a couple bare/sanded patches on the greens. This did not affect play for me, but what did was that some holes were over watered. The holes that were not over watered played firm and fast with the fairways rolling out and the greens requiring some precision to get it close. Other holes played soft with the ball stopping quickly. This drove me nuts as I never knew how a shot was going to react once it landed. Once on the greens, they rolled okay but generally were a little slow. The layout was enjoyable and worth the $45 but the conditions left something to be desired. If I could have found it for say $5 or $10 less it would have been a decent deal even with the problems the over watering caused.
