After playing Lake Park’s Executive Course (a 9-hole course) last fall I was back on Sunday to check out the Championship Course, which is the facility’s 18-hole course. The course’s website labels this course “championship” so I’ll stick with that term, however the 18-hole course is actually short and fairly easy!
Lake Park’s Championship Course (a Gary Panks and David Graham design) plays up to 6,135 yards with a rating of 68.3 and a slope of 108. It is a par-70, so it is geared more towards beginners and families than a serious player. And that seems to be the goal of the whole facility when you mix in the fun, 9-hole course.
The Championship Course is located close to Lewisville Lake, near a recreation area. The course sits between part of the lake’s dam and a campground, on a flat and open piece of land. You get a couple views of the water but nothing super exciting. After a hilly walk last weekend I was happy for the much easier walk at Lake Park!

The course was busy and after paying my $35 I headed to the 1st tee where two foursomes were already there. Things were disorganized, but ultimately I ended up joining a threesome and we played in about 4 hours 15 minutes – not great, but not much else to do these days so it was fine.
The layout on the Championship Course is about as nondescript as you’ll find. As you’ll see in the pictures the course is wide open with a few trees and some mounding mixed in to add interest. I don’t say that in a demeaning way though, as the course would be a great spot to learn the game.
While the Championship Course is “easy” the greens have plenty of undulation so even if you are knocking down flag sticks you likely won’t make everything. In fact, we found pins cut close to the edges of the greens and on steep slopes. I found the greens to be grainy and as a result my putter was ice-cold the entire round!

I wouldn’t say there is a signature hole here, but I did find the three par-5’s fun to play because I had the length to get there in two. All the par-5’s are around 500 yards. Yardages on the par-3’s and par-4’s are mixed nicely.
The conditions were fine except for the tee boxes on the par-3’s, which were burned out. I don’t think the par-3 tees were bermuda so that could be a contributing factor. There were dirt patches to be found but I had plenty of full, tight lies on the bermuda. The greens were cut low, a medium pace and yielded some bumpy rolls.
Unless you live around the corner or are a serious course collector like me then there are more interesting courses (and better values) in DFW. Still, the non-pretentious vibe at Lake Park is something I love! And, I liked that there were only two or three bunkers on the entire course.
