Riverdale Golf Course: Dunes Course (Brighton, CO on 05/02/12)

I played here on 05/02/12 from the tips at 73.2/133/7067. I have not played the other course, the Knolls course, but have heard that the Dunes is the more interesting of the two courses. Typically I do not like Pete Dye designs as I think they are too difficult for the average golfer, but this was probably the most forgiving Pete Dye design that I have played. The course was in good shape and it was very green and lush. The course is on a flat piece of land, which makes it a good walking course, but sometimes these flat courses do not engage a player mentally. That is not the case here and the Dunes course turned out to be a fantastic design which featured blind shots, some well placed water hazards, and a split fairway. The course had a links feel to it but did not play that way. There was mounding that had to be carried and some greens had false fronts which made getting an approach to a front flag difficult. For the most part the course was forgiving off the tee but there were a couple holes where an accurate tee shot was needed. One of these tight driving holes is the 15th which is my favorite hole as it is the most memorable on the course. There is water all down the left and high rough on the right so it requires a confident tee shot. On the other holes, if a shot was hit way offline then the fescue would grab it. Most holes are close together but privacy was provided through mounding and railroad ties separating the holes. If I had to pick something I did not like about the course it was that a wayward shot could affect another group’s play. I thought it was difficult to pick lines here compared to other courses that I have played, so it might be best to play with a local. The greens rolled nice and had subtle breaks around the holes. I liked the fact that even from the tips the yardage is not overwhelming because the course plays at altitude. I found that on a warm day the ball was traveling between one and two clubs longer compared to sea level. Overall I had a nice round and got finished in 4 hours on a weekday during twilight for $40 (with a cart). The course is close to the airport so that would be attractive to those who are looking at a flight before or after a round. This is not one of the most scenic courses that I have played so if you are looking for that you are probably better served golfing on the south and west sides of Denver.
