Rockwind Community Links: Lil’ Rock Course (Hobbs, NM on 05/23/20)

After my round on the 18-hole course at Rockwind I had plenty of time left to check out the 9-hole par-3 course. I dropped the cart off at the clubhouse (it is walking only), paid my $6 and wandered over to the first tee.

I say “wandered” as I actually ended up on the second tee box as things weren’t marked very well. Or, maybe I missed a sign – very possible! Anyway, I left my bag next to the green and walked back to the first tee with a wedge and a golf ball to get started.

And, Lil’ Rock turned out to be a fun short course and nice walk. It is a shorter nine-holer, playing under 1,000 yards (998 yards to be exact) even with a 187 yard par-3. Besides that long 4th hole everything else should only be a short iron. There is even a 65 yard par-3. As far as I can tell there is only one set of tees, but you could tee up anywhere on the tee boxes because there weren’t any markers.

The 99 yard par-3 5th.

My favorite par-3 on Lil’ Rock was the 99 yard 5th. Both the tee and the green are surrounded by trees which gave the hole a nice look. Similar to the main course, Lil’ Rock has some grass mounds throughout the course, including on the 5th hole.

Also like the 18-hole course, Lil’ Rock was nicely maintained. The tees were full and the greens were smooth. The greens here have much less break compared to the main course so that is a plus for the families and beginners who will most likely be playing out here.

If you have some free time before or after the 18-hole course then I’d suggest taking a spin around Lil’ Rock! It is an above average par-3 course in its look and maintenance and is a nice compliment to the main course.
