Spring Creek Golf Club (Gordonsville, VA on 09/14/12)

This was my first round in my new home state! I played here on 09/14/12 from the Marble tees at 73.2/145/6673 on a perfect day for golf. According to Golf Digest, Spring Creek is one of the top public courses in Virginia and the course did not disappoint. The course is pricey ($70 to $95) depending on the day of the week that someone plays, but I found a mid-day time on golfnow for $35 and it was one of the best values that I have ever encountered. The first thing that I noticed when picking the tees to play was the high slope, so the course certainly can be punishing and I did not even choose to play from the tips. I have not played too many courses in the area yet, but I am assuming that most are similar to this one with trees and dense vegetation off the rough line, so a wayward day could be costly score wise. The course gradually seemed to get more hilly after the first 4 holes were pretty flat and there were a handful of elevated tee boxes, so the designer did a good job with the elevation change. There were not any holes that had crazy elevation changes, no more than a club for me. Towards the end of the round I noticed that some of the fairways sloped the ball one way or the other so that knowledge could be handy when playing here again. I was not fond of this slope on all the way to the green on #18 (a mid length par 5) as it resulted in a hook lie which could bring the water into play. The course, while in great condition, was soft and between the softness and the hills I thought that it played longer than the yardage. Overall the course conditions were fantastic. The fairways and tee boxes (except the par 3 tee boxes) were like carpet and the greens were quick and rolled well but did have some ball marks. The rough was long for the most which made playing from it a challenge and while there were some bare spots, I am thinking that is common at courses here after the summer heat. Plus, the bunkers had great sand without any rocks or pebbles. Some courses are a nightmare to play for the first time but Spring Creek, although tough, was straightforward. There were a couple awkward driving holes (#6 & #7 come to mind) and the green on #17 was a little quirky for my liking, but for the most part a good shot was rewarded at Spring Creek. The greens had some big slopes, but not on every hole which was nice. Each hole was set apart from the next and there were very few homes on the course. Plus it was a pretty course to look at and see how each hole was carved out of the woods. The round took 5 hours which always is too long, but look forward to my next round here because of the challenge and the fairness of the course.
