Stoneybrook West Golf Club (Winter Garden, FL on 11/22/12)

I played a mid-morning round here on Thanksgiving Day (11/22/12) from the blue tees (71.4/131/6455). The goal was to find a place to play that was cheap, but still a course that was in decent shape (something that Florida offers during peak season). The price was right ($29 on Golfnow) and the drive was pretty easy (up 429 which is a toll road) so it was not going to be a big loss if it did not work out. Like many of the courses that I have played in Florida Stoneybrook West is a community course and this is evident from the first hole. Holes #1 thru #4 all have cookie cutter homes lining each side of the course so it does not have the makings of a championship layout. The course started to open up with fewer homes on #5, a par 5 that was heavily bunkered with a rolling fairway and many palm trees. The course started to gain a little character from then on as #6 was a dog leg left par 4 with a tough approach to a green guarded by water, #8 required a couple solid shots to make par, and #9 was a reachable par 5 that had some risk/reward to it. To me these holes had a bit of a resort feel with all the palm trees in view. Hole #10 had a natural feel to it, #13 was a short par 4 with a tough green to hit because it was elevated, and #14 was a slightly downhill par 5 that had a good view of a lake in the background. The closing holes were a bit uninteresting as homes again lined each side of the course except on #18. The final hole was a good closing hole with water in play all the down the left side. Overall the layout was good considering the $29 green fee during peak season as there were some good holes and some good challenges. The course had some mounding, rolling fairways, and elevated greens to keep me guessing on some shots and it was well bunkered throughout. It featured quite a bit of water but it was not overly penal, at least from the blue tees. As far as the condition, the fairways were not in the best shape as they had some burnt patches, divots, and foreign grasses in some spots but for the price I found it tolerable. The tees and fringes were a little long as I think the course was coming out of the overseeding process but the greens were in good shape considering the average condition of the rest of the course. The greens were a challenge to putt because of the slopes, an average speed, and rolled pretty well. I would put this place on any budget golfer’s list.
