The Oaks Golf Course (Corsicana, TX on 07/28/19)

After my round at Old Brickyard I headed about a half hour south on the I-45 to the small town of Corsicana. I’ve been in the habit recently of trying to add a nine hole course after my main round and that is what I ended up doing here!

While entering the parking lot you’ll find the small clubhouse on one side and a restaurant associated with the course on the other. I didn’t try the restaurant but it didn’t look like a bad spot to grab a bite to eat.

I paid the $20 riding green fee hoping to get around quickly. However, in retrospect I probably would have had a more enjoyable time walking. That way I could have saved a few bucks and got some exercise. Plus, I wouldn’t have had to deal with trying to skip around the crazy routing here!

According to the course’s website The Oaks changed ownership in 2015. Prior to being named The Oaks I believe the course was called Oak Trail. I even found another name of New Oaks for the place. And, all those ownership changes have resulted in a frustrating routing.

A look at what I thought was the 5th hole.

I teed off behind a threesome and they disappeared while I was playing the 1st. I thought they might have returned to the clubhouse but then they reappeared while I was on the putting green. Apparently, you go past the 3rd hole and an old skeleton hole on the way to the 2nd tee.

I decided that I’d skip the 2nd and just play the 3rd hole. That would allow me to get in front of threesome and then I’d come back and play the 2nd. Easy enough, or so I thought!

I played the 4th and then had no idea where to tee off on the 5th. On the scorecard the 5th is a short par-4, but the only tee boxes I could find in the area didn’t have any tee markers. Plus, that spot was signed as the 1st hole – for an old routing!

So for the 5th hole I just hit my drive on what looked like a 500 yard par-5. What was hilarious is that my drive ended up right next to the tee boxes I should have played from.

As you can see in this pic the greens were the highlight of the maintenance.

Anyway, all that confusion cost me some time and I rushed to play the 9th and 2nd holes while avoiding a couple families. As you can probably tell that soured things a bit at The Oaks! Some better directions would have been a huge help.

If you know where you are going then The Oaks isn’t a bad little course. The course sits on a nice piece of property with plenty of oak trees that add some interest to the setting. Some of the fairways and green complexes are framed by trees and there is more to like than not like in that regards.

You’ll also get to mix up the yardages as I hit quite a few different clubs on this par-35. I played the blue tees which top out at 2,846 yards. There are three par-3’s, two par-5’s and four par-4’s – ranging from 300 to 420 yards.

The conditions are about what I expected for a country course in North Texas during the summer – a bit rough around the edges. The fairways and greens were surprisingly decent. Everything else was bone dry with large bare spots.

Unless you are obsessed with trying to play everything in North Texas (like me) then there probably isn’t much reason to play The Oaks. However, it is a decent little course for the community – just with a confusing routing.

  1. So glad you came to play! We’re definitely struggling getting the routing right. The Skelton hole is set to open this April along with new cart paths. The New Owner is definitely striving to return the course to its for community glory! Great read and as the super id say it’s 100% on point. Course was established in 1935 and as definitely neglected by previous 2 owners. Next time you’re in Tx come back and we’ll play and lunch is on us!
