Kuehn Park Golf Course (Sioux Falls, SD on 08/03/21)

I made it to Sioux Falls on Sunday night and spent most of the week working during the day and visiting family in the evenings. Although it wasn’t meant to be a week of vacation, I still enjoyed my second visit to Sioux Falls. I was up early on Tuesday and headed just up the road from where we were staying for a round at Kuehn Park Golf Course.

Kuehn Park is one of the Sioux Falls city courses and I thought I could squeeze in a quick round before working later in the day. And, that is exactly what I did. I walked Kuehn Park’s nine holes in about an hour then worked a full day. Needless to say, the golf beat the work!

My tee time was at 7am and I got there a little early in hopes of beating the morning rush. As it turned out, I didn’t have anything to worry about as hardly anyone was out playing so early. The proshop guy, the maintenance person and one other golfer were the only folks I saw until I put my clubs back in the car.

The par-4 8th on a nice morning.

The cost was $17 for nine holes which I thought was reasonable. The course was in great shape, especially for a muni. The turf was full and lush, with a nice green color to it. The greens had some dew to begin which slowed things down, however they rolled smooth and quick after the morning maintenance.

The layout at Kuehn Park is parkland style and fairly straightforward. The course is in the middle of town, with the perimeter holes lined by homes while the interior holes are separated by trees. There are many tight corridors to get from the tees to the greens. The land in Sioux Falls is pretty flat and you’ll see that in the pictures.

I thought there was a nice mix of holes at Kuehn Park. The course is a par-30 and plays 2,076 yards from the blue tees. The 1st, 8th and 9th are par-4’s while the 2nd through the 7th are a string of par-3’s. The par-4’s allowed me to hit driver and the par-3’s varied the yardage from 123 to 222 yards. The 3rd is the 222 yard par-3 and the tee box is tucked back in a group of trees, making it tough to get a long club through the narrow gap. I thought the greens were fair with the contour and a couple were hourglass shaped, making it tough to get an iron close.

I had a great morning and thought Kuehn Park was a good course. Normally nine-hole courses offer a more relaxed vibe compared to eighteen-hole courses and I found that here. The only issue I can find with Kuehn Park is that it might not be the best beginners course since trees encroach many tee shots.
