Lakeridge Golf Course (Reno, NV on 03/25/12)

The next course I played on my Northern Nevada golf weekend was Lakeridge Golf Course. Lakeridge wasn’t really on my radar, but a local that I played with at ArrowCreek the day before spoke well of the course. Lakeridge was convenient – not far from the airport – so I figured I’d give it a try.

I played the back tees which are 71.6/136/6715. Lakeridge is characterized by two different nines. The front nine is on flatter ground while the back nine plays into the hills, with some elevation change. The front nine has many less than inspiring holes – I hope I said that right – that play through a development.

The par-3 15th – the signature hole at Lakeridge.

Overall, I much preferred the back nine because it has the course’s signature hole. The 15th is a 239 yard par-3 that drops 100+ feet to an island green. It was fun to play, but in a gimmicky sort of way. Reno is about 4,500 feet above sea level so the ball travels farther through the thinner air. With that extra distance and the downhill, it was almost impossible to pick the right club on my first visit. I hit my 200 yard club, which sailed the green into the water. Oof. Still, the 15th is a very memorable signature hole.

The green fee here was $45. It is March in Northern Nevada so conditions won’t be anywhere near peak. I get that. Everything at Lakeridge was so-so, even for this time of year. The greens rolled fine, but the rest of the course had quite a few bare patches where there should be turf. The maintenance at Lakeridge was the worst of the four courses I played on this trip.

The 15th is an incredible par-3 and probably makes LakeRidge worth playing. But, I’d hit a few other courses before this one if you don’t mind a longer drive. Personally, I much preferred ArrowCreek and Wolf Run. And, both ArrowCreek and Wolf Run had a cheaper green fee.
