Webb Hill Country Club (Wolfe City, TX on 12/25/19)

I didn’t take any time off from work this holiday season. I did that for a few reasons, but that choice left me off on Wednesday, Christmas! My family lives out of state so I made the best of the day and headed over to play a new course.

I’ll say that finding a course open on Christmas around Dallas was more challenging than I expected! There was a place in Frisco that was open, but they don’t take tee times for singles. I saw that Webb Hill Country Club had tee times all day and decided to give it a try.

Webb Hill is about an hour out of Dallas, not far from the I-30. There were a few cars in the parking lot and a handful of groups on the first tee when I arrived. All in all, the pace was good and I played in 3 hours 15 minutes.

The thing I noticed most about Webb Hill was the warm and friendly vibe of the place. For example, I walked into the proshop and was greeted by the course’s owner. In our conversation he mentioned that he designed Mesquite Golf Club, which is close to the Dallas city limits.

The layup on the 8th is one of the toughest shots at Webb Hill.

Also, I made a new friend on the course! A dog (maybe the owner’s?) was sleeping near the 5th green and apparently he woke up, found me on the 12th hole and curled up next to the cart. That was a golf-course first for me.

Webb Hill dates back to 1969 and occupies some rolling terrain. That terrain is a bit unique to North Texas and added lots of interest to the round. There is plenty of up and down which will have you trying to add and take off yardage to your shots.

I played the blue tees which are 72.5/127/6806. I found the tree-lined fairways, blind shots and some undulating greens to be the biggest challenges. After four fairly wide holes to open, the remainder of the course is mostly tight. If you want to score you’ll need to get the driver in play often! Thankfully, there isn’t a lot of lost ball trouble lurking on the blind shots.

These pines on the 9th add some nice “green” this time of year.

Two long par-5’s at Webb Hill are probably the course’s most memorable holes. The 8th is 590 yards while the 13th is 568 yards! The 8th plays quite a bit downhill and has a tricky layup. The 13th is probably the quirkiest hole on the course as it plays into a group of what looked like cedar trees. The final half of the hole doglegs left, but slopes right so it will take three great shots to avoid all the trees.

The conditions were satisfactory for the $25 green fee. Everything was dormant so I’d like to get back out here for some better pics when things green up. Until then though, you’ll have to use your imagination! The fairways were mostly full and I had a mix of good and marginal lies in them. Off the fairways there were plenty of dirt patches. The greens were a medium pace and bumped a bit.

As I usually do, I enjoyed my afternoon playing a new course. Is a round here worth the drive from Dallas? Probably not with all the other courses in the area. However, as long as you don’t mind a country course I’d have no problem recommending Webb Hill.
