Immediately after my round at the Golf Club at Champions Circle I stopped to get gas and something to drink. While I was pumping gas I started thinking that it would be the perfect evening for some night golf!
Lake Park was more or less on my way home and one of the courses there has lights (the 9-hole executive course). I called over and asked if they turn the lights on this time of year, and sure enough, they do! Earlier this year I golfed at night in Virginia and had a blast. So, I’ve been wanting to do it again!
I got over to Lake Park a little before 7pm, just as the sun was setting. I paid my $13 or so to walk and headed out on a refreshingly chilly evening! The high the last couple days has only been 65 degrees, which has been a big change from the summer heat.
It turned out to be a great evening/night on the executive course. On one side of the course the sky was glowing while the full moon was rising on the other. I ended up playing here at the perfect time to get the full daylight to nighttime experience!
I think it is safe to say that golfing at night was my favorite part of my round on the executive course. And, just like last time, I struggled with the finer details of the game at night. For example, I find green reading and judging lies to be more difficult at night.
The nighttime golf part aside, the executive course is a solid little course. I’ll admit it doesn’t look like much, as it lies on a cleared out section of land in the middle of a neighborhood. However, the fairly large greens have some interesting contour and a bit of mounding surrounds them. Like most short courses, you’ll get to work on your chipping if you miss the greens.
The course plays as a par-28 with eight par-3’s and one par-4. The majority of the par-3’s play between 130 and 160 yards, but there is also a short par-3 and a long par-3. Throw in the 350 yard par-4 4th hole and you’ll vary the club selection!
The conditions were fine and didn’t take away from the round. The tees are grass and most boxes were in good shape. Some greens looked to be recently aerated and as you’d except, they were slower than average. However, I wouldn’t let the less-than-perfect conditioning keep you away.
I had lots of fun here and would recommend checking out Lake Park’s Executive Course if you are in the area. The course checks a lot of boxes when it comes to growing the game and the lights add a bit of a surreal touch to the golfing experience!
