Fairway Village Golf Course (Vancouver, WA on 07/24/20)

One of the things I love about this time of year is the possibility for plenty of golf after work! My friend and I booked a 7pm tee time at Fairway Village Golf Course – a nine-hole course – and enjoyed another beautiful evening outside.

It was cloudy most of the day, but during the evening hours things cleared up and it turned into perfect golf weather – mid 70’s with great lighting. I’ll remember a couple things about Fairway Village, including how the course shined during golden hour!

Fairway Village is located close to the I-205 in an age-restricted community and was built in the early 1980’s. The course was designed by Gene Mason, who has done some other work in the Pacific Northwest. Ultimately, Fairway Village turned out to be a great find.

The course rings its way through the homes/condos but isn’t overly tight, except for the 7th hole. If you look at Fairway Village on the satellite then it likely won’t strike you as anything special. However, most of the holes have large Douglas fir trees that line the fairways and allow for some privacy while golfing. There is an interesting amount of elevation change and I enjoyed the walk.

The sky was on fire the night we played!

Fairway Village is a par-34 with three par-3’s, five par-4’s and one par-5. There are two sets of tees and we opted for the blue tees which are 2,631 yards. From that yardage it is one of those courses where you can hit driver to be aggressive or lay back and try to hit short irons close. There are lots of options!

The 5th, 6th and 7th were my favorite holes. The 5th and 6th are back-to-back par-3’s that play to greens surrounded by trees. The 6th is uphill and the green’s surface isn’t visible from the tee, so that makes it tricky to pick the right club. The 7th is a 382 yard par-4 where you better hit a straight drive because trees surround the tee box!

We paid $20 each and the course was soft, but in good shape. The fairways were full, just a bit long. The greens rolled well and had good pace to them. A single joined us for the last few holes and said that he plays out here often and pays less using a punch card, so deals can be found.

I found a lot to like about Fairway Village and it checks the boxes that I look for in a nine-hole course. I was surprised by its upscale feel and would guess it likely is one of the top nine-hole courses in the Portland metro!
